Das hat ja mal ein ganzes Weilchen gedauert, bis Mother Road uns mit dem zweiten Album beglücken. 2013 schlossen sich Chris Lyne (u.a. Soul Doctor), Keith Slack (u.a. Steelhouse Lane, Mudpie), Zacky Tsoukas (auch u.a. Soul Doctor) und Frank Binke (u.a. Kingdom Come) zusammen, tüteten das Debüt ein und „Drive“ erfreute 2014 zig Bluesrock Freunde weltweit. Nun ist es endlich soweit und nach kurzzeitiger Trennung fand man fast komplett wieder zusammen, um „II“ einzuspielen und zu veröffentlichen. Für den passenden Basssound & Groove sorgt diesmal Barry Sparks (u.a. MSG, Dokken), der mit Zacky eine sehr geerdete Basis bereitet, in der Chris verläßlich mit seiner Gibson voll aufgehen kann und Keith sein dafür gemachtes Stimmorgan diesmal noch abwechslungsreicher einsetzt, als es noch vor 7 Jahren der Fall war.

Grundsätzlich (und glücklicherweise) ist die Band bei ihrem Soundgerüstmix aus amerikanisch- und britisch-beeinflußten Blues Rock & Hard Rock geblieben, der wie Keiths Stimme schon, diesmal etwas variabler, abwechslungsreicher gespielt wird. Vergleiche würden da schon eher in Richtung Joe Bonamassa und Free gehen (vllt. sogar auch noch Gary Moore und Rory Gallagher ins Boot geholt), statt früherer Deep Purple & Whitesnake um es grob zu umschreiben. Letztendlich ist es für den einen und anderen neugierigen Musikfreund ein kleiner Anhaltspunkt, wo wir uns in etwa musikalisch befinden, denn Mother Road festigen mit den neuen Songs derzeit mehr den ganz eigenen Sound, der auch gern mit der einen und anderen Überraschung aufwartet. Seien es funky Töne durch Bläsereinsatz, das wirklich sehr abwechslungsreiche Spiel von Chris, die Variabilität von Keiths Stimme, die treibende und pumpende Rhythmusarbeit von Zacky und Barry, die ganz kleinen Ausflüge in Richtung 70´s mit leichtem 80´s Flair, Soul, Southern und ´ne Menge hörbare Motivation; das macht Mother Road 2021 aus und ich bin sehr glücklich mit der Entwicklung. Es wäre auch sehr schön, wenn das Bestand hätte und auf „III“ nicht wieder 7 Jahre gewartet werden muß.
Fazit: Da muß aber erstmal eine Scheibe aus dem Genre gegen antreten – ich habe mein Bluesrock Highlight derzeit für mich gefunden. Was mir noch so nebenher auffällt: das könnte auch sehr gut Freunden der Bad Company gefallen…
Für die Freakos und Sammler: Soeben erschien das Album auch in Japan mit hübscher Banderole, aber ohne üblichen Bonustrack (schade). Im Shop vom Label gibt es coole Bundles (auch Vinyl) zu fairen Preisen.

It took quite a while until Mother Road made us happy with their second album. In 2013 Chris Lyne (Soul Doctor and more), Keith Slack (Steelhouse Lane, Mudpie and more), Zacky Tsoukas (also among others Soul Doctor) and Frank Binke (Kingdom Come and more) joined forces, produced the debut and „Drive“ delighted countless blues rock friends worldwide in 2014. Now the time has finally come and after a short separation they found together again almost completely to record and release „II“. This time Barry Sparks (MSG, Dokken, among others) provides the appropriate bass sound & groove, who prepares a very grounded basis with Zacky, in which Chris can reliably fully emerge with his Gibson and Keith uses his made for it vocal organ this time even more varied than it was the case 7 years ago.
Basically (and fortunately) the band has remained with their sound framework mix of American- and British-influenced blues rock & hard rock, which is played like Keith’s voice already, this time a little more variable, more varied. Comparisons would go there already rather in the direction of Joe Bonamassa and Free (possibly even Gary Moore and Rory Gallagher brought on board), instead of earlier Deep Purple & Whitesnake to describe it roughly. Ultimately, it is for the one and other curious music friend a small clue where we are musically, because Mother Road currently consolidate with the new songs more and more their own sound, which also comes up with some surprises. Be it funky tones through the use of horns, the really varied playing of Chris, the variability of Keith’s voice, the driving and pumping rhythm work of Zacky and Barry, the very small excursions in the direction of 70’s with a slight 80’s flair, Soul, Southern and a lot of audible motivation; that makes Mother Road 2021 and I am very happy with the development. It would also be very nice if this would last and we don’t have to wait 7 years for „III“ again.
Conclusion: But first a disc from the genre has to compete against it – I have found my Bluesrock highlight for me at the moment. What I still notice so incidentally: this could also please very well friends of the Bad Company…
For the freakos and collectors: The album has just been released in Japan with a nice sleeve, but without the usual bonus track (a pity). In the store of the label there are cool bundles (also vinyl) at fair prices.
